Foster needed for 18-month-old 65-lb male yellow Lab "Rico"

Background: Rico's former suddenly had to leave the country on short notice (NFI) and was unable to find anyone to take him... so he brought him to Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez.

What Rico's Former Owner Says: Rico is a healthy AKC-registered Lab with a big heart.  He loves being with people and he doesn't like being left alone.  When he's outside by himself, he tries to jump the fence or find a way out.  When people are around, he is sweet and playful. The right home for him should have someone home for a good part of the day or a plan like doggy daycare or dog walker.  He is crate-trained... so he can spend time in his crate when no one is home.  He needs a patient human who will keep working on his training and socialization, both at home and in public.  An active family or person who has time for a high-energy young Lab is ideal.

What Rico's Evaluator Says: After spending an hour with him, I would say his worst fault is that he barks when he's excited....a lot!  He does well in playgroups with other dogs -- boys or girls...  You can see the play with the shepherd who kept nipping him and all he did was redirect the play to running more or jumping in the pool or something else.  He does "sit".  Was too excited to do a "down", but I wouldn't be surprised if he knows that also.  Takes treats nicely... Could have cared less about the food bowl... Most difficult thing about him is getting him back into his kennel... He really, really hates it here at the shelter.  Very strong to walk; needs a guy that can hang on to him... and a few basic Dog 101 classes.  From a short lady's perspective, the best thing about him was he didn't seem to have any inclination to jump on people, which is very rare for a large young Lab.  A very very nice dog.

What Rico's Rescue Rep Says:A lotta dog here!  Will need a strong hand to walk him.  Will need lots of exercise and guidance.  Would be great for him to go to a home with an existing dog... so they could run and romp,  Not idea how he is with cats.  Probably too energetic for a home with small children.

Medical: Rico appears to be in great health.  Current on vaccinations and microchipped.  Will soon be neutered.

Located In: Martinez.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
