JACK ~1-Year-Old Male Chocolate Lab 86-lbs, Intact, GGLRR will coordinate his neuter
Background: Jack was picked up as a stray and made his way to Lab Rescue via the shelter in Dublin. A rescue networker reached out and asked if we had any room for a "big, goofy, strong chocolate Lab that would thrive with some training" We had one of our volunteers go out and meet Jack who said Jack appeared to be a good dog that needed a strong handler to work with and train him.
What Jack's Foster Says: Jack is a friendly guy, gets along well with my children and likes my little dog. He is thriving with a lot of structure and likes to be with us when we're all at home. He definitely still has a lot of puppy tendencies as he will get into things he's not supposed to e.g. my children's toys.
He's been exposed to dogs of all sizes, gets excited when he sees them and is working on picking up signals from other dogs to give them their space. I've been walking him on a front lead harness and he has responded well to it. He's great off leash. He will cruise around and then walk right next to you after he has checked everything out.
His forever home will need to have a yard and space to run around.
He is getting really good at sleeping in and using a crate.
An active family with older kids (6 years and older) would be great, an outdoors type of family if they wanted to train him for retrieving. A family that will give him a ton of structure and direction.
House trained: I would say yes. He has never had an accident with us in the house or marked anything. We have him on a really good bathroom schedule. He will definitely counter surf and chew things. I had a harness on him in the car, and he chewed out of it.
Training: He still gets excited and will jump up occasionally. He’ll do it once and you can tell he knows “oops don’t do that again” and he’s not jumping way up high at eye level like he was. He's been exposed to dogs of all sizes, gets excited when he sees them, and is working on picking up signals from other dogs to give them their space. I've been walking him on a front lead harness and he has responded well to it; he still pulls a little but it’s because he smells something and he needs to locate it. He's great off leash. He will cruise around and then walk right next to you after he has checked everything out. "Sit" command is going well and we are working on "Wait" . He waits before I open up his crate and before meal times. If he doesn’t perform a task you are asking him to do, it’s because he is so excited to be with you and his motor is just going 100 miles per hour.
What Jack's Rescue Rep Says: Jack is one big handsome Lab, a very large puppy, about a year old. I met him at his foster home, soon after his foster picked him up from the shelter. One big, happy, friendly guy who jumped up to say hello (to which I turned away, and he stopped). He allowed all over handling. No food-guarding or food-aggression. The right adopter is an experienced handler who is ready to take on the challenge of showing this guy the ropes to help him reach his full potential through structure and positive guidance. Not for families with small children or anyone unsteady on their feet due to his exuberance and potentially knocking over a little one (unintentionally), cats unknown.
Medical: Jack is current on core vaccines, heartworm tested (negative), and microchipped. We will be coordinating Jack's neuter.
