Emmeline 2 y.o. 47 lbs. black Lab mix, Spayed, Special Needs
Background: This young girl is highly suspected of being dumped in a rural area of Monterey county, as she showed up on the finder's property which is in the middle of nowhere.
Taken to the local shelter, staff immediately reached out to Golden Gate as this sweet dog needs medical attention due to walking in circles.
She tested positive for Ehrlichia, which means she’s been exposed to ticks in the past. She's currently on a month-long course of antibiotics. We’re hopeful this treatment will resolve her circling—if it doesn’t, we’ll be heading to a neurologist to get her the specialized care she needs.
The person who found her was going to foster but backed out at the last minute. Thankfully, the shelter found another volunteer who stepped up in a pinch while we find her a longer term foster.
She has been named Emmeline and was spayed on Monday (March 24) and went to a temporary home on Tuesday (March 25). .
What Emmeline's Temp Foster Says: She spends her day mostly resting or circling. It is a lot of work for her to get to the water bowl but she figures it out. I have a large water bucket to make it easier for her. She was unable to drink out of a regular dog water bowl. I have not seen her play with any toys. She does well on walks if it is a route she is familiar with, walking mostly in a straight line, but on new routes she circles a lot. She has not barked once, but does whine at dogs and cats and in her crate. She does not like the crate but puts up with it. She needs one big enough for her to circle in. She seems house trained but I am taking her out often. She does try to chase cats, and she loves my dogs and they like her outside, but her circling makes them uncomfortable in the house so I have them separated. She will try to get on furniture and is a true Lab and will do whatever she can to get food. She had no problem jumping right onto our tractor when we walked by it (she was only on it when it was stationary but I included the picture because she looked so cute). She sits for her dinner. I think she had training at some point but won't sit on command. She is a sweetheart, has shown no aggression, and is super cute. She loves people and other dogs.
She definitely prefers to have people around, and she will whine occasionally when alone (I have never heard her bark). She loves her dog bed and sometimes I have to coax her to get off of it to come on a walk.
I think she needs someone around all the time when indoors, not because of anxiety but just to manage her. I think she would be fine alone if there is a set-up where she could be left in a room and not in a crate. She would be happy with access to a dog bed.
I know she is a lot of work, but she is a super sweet dog and I feel like we are seeing a little more of her personality every day.
