Foster needed for 1-year-old 71-lb neutered male black Lab mix "Clifford"
Background: Found as a stray in San Francisco, this big guy is now winning the hearts of the staff at SF Animal Care and Control with his spirited exuberance.
BREAKING: SF Animal Care and Control does not have a single open kennel in the shelter... and dogs (including Clifford) are at risk of being euthanized for space.
What Clifford's Evaluator Says: We met Clifford in the play area at SF ACC. When Clifford saw Carter standing, but bowing down, Clifford became scared and immediately went behind Katy. It wasn’t until Carter sat on the bench (less frightening) that Clifford did a 180-degree turn-around and immediately went on the bench and played with Carter. Friendly, interested in interaction, sought affection. Nice wiggly body. We think Clifford had never walked on a leash before. Doesn't know any commands; doesn't even know how to "sit" -- but loves treats and has a soft mouth. Teeth look fine. Clifford is very gentle and allowed physical examination without resistance. Clifford does not know how to fetch a ball or toy. High energy, but calmed down easily. Clifford is primed to receive some overdue training. Not ideal for a family with small children due to his jumpiness. Clifford is a very friendly dog who likes people and, according to ACC, has had no problem getting along with other dogs. He gives kisses and likes being close and getting affection. He had no problem with resource guarding. He is very energetic and puppyish, tending to run around a lot and jump up on people, so he’s not the best choice for a family with young children - at least not until he has had some training. He’ll need daily exercise and, ideally, a back yard with some room to romp. He liked to splash in the tub, so he most likely would love swimming. Clifford is sort of a blank canvas - He doesn’t know any commands, does not appear to have had any leash training, and doesn’t seem to really understand the concept of toys . . . he would chase them some but seemed uncertain about what to do. So he doesn’t have many habits to un-learn. We are not sure if he is toilet-trained.
What Clifford's Rescue Rep Says: Clifford the Big Black Dog is an absolute hoot. Would be fine with another dog of equal energy and disposition. He is a diamond in the rough" and will need a steady hand to learn the ropes of basic obedience, leash walking - and how to play with toys. Best for older children. No idea how he is with cats.
Medical: In great health. Current on vaccinations. Microchipped. Just got neutered.
Located In: San Francisco.
