Bo: ~2-year-old Male Chocolate Lab Mix (Possibly Golden Retriever X), ~62 lbs, Neutered

Background: Bo was picked up as a stray at the end of September. Bo is microchipped and was originally adopted through the SPCA in Monterey County, but attempts to contact his owner—including leaving a note at the listed address—went unanswered.

When found, Bo’s skin was in poor condition: The shelter started him on Credelio for fleas and noted, “Dog is extremely itchy and has multiple hot spots. Also, he is missing roughly 50% of his coat. Gave Credelio and placed exam slip on clinic board.”

Staff believe his hair loss is due to a flea allergy. Since treatment, his itching has subsided and his coat is already growing back. When Golden Gate went out to meet Bo, I found a young and friendly dog. He pulled some on walks. He allowed all over handling and exhibited no food aggression. He was very interested and friendly towards the dogs he met (a 6-7 month old male Heeler, and a female Terrier-age?) When Bo was sniffing and pawing at the Terrier, she snarled and snapped at him. Bo didn't react and returned to a game of fetch. We bypassed two dogs that were in an enclosed space, barking at Bo through the chain link fence; Bo sniffed through the fence with a wagging tail and was easily guided away. Shelter staff also reported Bo and another dog were playing fetch on a different day; when she took the ball from Bo, he was fine with it.

What Bo's Foster Says: Bo is a very sweet pup who loves to be around his people, snuggling, and playing.  He has a lot of energy and LOVES fetching a ball at the park or anywhere else for that matter.  Fetching a ball or Kong toy is his #1 motivator.  Since receiving treatment for his skin, his coat is coming back very nicely.  He is a smart and attentive companion; he knows to wait to eat his food until he sits and makes eye contact, he’s fully house trained, waits at doors for an ‘OK’ to proceed, and has good recall.  Being young, Bo needs some work on walks; he pulls a bit and gets excited when he sees another dog; nothing aggressive, he just really wants to say hello!  Being a puppy, he is still learning boundaries when greeting other dogs.  He has a tendency to come up a little quick and older dogs will give him an appropriate correction.  He is very friendly with people of all ages and has met some younger children (9-12).  Around the house, he is always nearby, tail wagging, and interested in what his people are doing.  His little tail is always wagging!  Bo gets frequent zoomies running around in full bum-down speed mode; happy, silly, and carefree.  Bo would be a great companion for an active family, couple, or individual who can take him on adventures and enjoy life together.

What Bo's Rescue Rep Says: Bo is a young, friendly pup (Vet suspects closer to 2 years of age). He’s housetrained, good with other dogs, and always up for a game of fetch or a walk around the neighborhood. His playful, affectionate nature makes him an easy dog to fall in love with.

His fur is growing in and as aforementioned, the shelter vet and a vet he visited through Lab Rescue think he's recovering from a flea allergy.

He’s currently being fostered in a home without children, so we’re not sure how he is with kids, but he has met children in the 9-12 range in the company of his foster and based on his friendly disposition, we suspect he’d do just fine with respectful ones. We don’t know how he is with cats.

Bo thrives with companionship and would do best in a home where he won’t be left alone for long stretches of the day.

If you’re looking for a happy, loyal companion who’s ready for adventures, love, and attention, Bo may be your match!

Medical: Bo is neutered, heartworm tested (-), microchipped, and up to date on core vaccines. We took him to the vet, and they think he is recovering from a flea allergy. Since he's been on monthly flea/tick prevention, his fur is growing in but he's still quite itchy. He was treated with a cytopoint injection to ease the itching and sent home with a medicated shampoo and topical mousse. His foster reports he is doing great and has also been giving him fish oil to help with his skin and coat.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
