Shadow: 5 y/o intact black male Lab, ~90 lbs
at fair

Background: Shadow was surrendered to his current owner by a relative after significant life changes occurred for the relative. The current owner is overwhelmed with caregiving responsibilities for her disabled husband and contacted GGLRR to find Shadow a new forever home where he can thrive.

Shadow is currently not getting much attention or exercise in his current living situation so we’d love to get him into a foster home where he can get back into an active routine while he awaits his forever family.

What GGLRR Evaluator Says: Shadow has not been receiving regular exercise, structure, or boundaries for several months. When I first met Shadow, he was excited and attempted to jump on me several times. After a few minutes, he settled nicely. With a consistent exercise routine and clear structure, I believe this behavior can be improved quickly. He did well overall during our walk.

Shadow is a very affectionate dog. He showed no signs of resource guarding with his food bowl and took treats gently from my hand. When I began petting him, he immediately rolled onto his back for belly rubs. He knows sit, down, and shake, though he does not hold the sit or down position for long. He would benefit from learning a clear “release” cue to improve his impulse control.

Shadow is highly food motivated, which should make training straightforward and enjoyable for him. The current owner reports that Shadow was very good with her son’s infant child.

During a meet‑and‑greet with my dog, Shadow pulled toward my dog initially, but his tail was wagging and his approach was friendly. He settled down quickly after the initial greeting. The current owner also mentioned that he gets along well with her own dog.

What Shadow's Rescue Rep Says: This handsome boy is a really great dog. He's big, enthusiastic, and energetic so his adopter needs to be comfortable handling a large dog. Shadow used to go running in the morning with his original family so he’d be a good fit for someone looking for a running companion. He’s done well living with other dogs and kids. Don’t know about cats but Shadow loves to go after squirrels so we’re thinking probably not good for a house with cats. Shadow is a happy, playful, and affectionate dog who will bring a lot of fun and joy to your life.

Medical: Shadow is generally in good health. He is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and has a recent heartworm test. We will coordinate his neuter with his adopter or foster.

Our volunteers donate their personal time phones so please only call during reasonable hours (8am - 8pm). The Rescue Rep identified in the dog posting is the only person with information about the dog - please only contact the designated volunteer. We do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week; we do not have a facility where the dogs are housed, they are in foster homes throughout the Bay Area.
